10 Health Benefits of Sesame

1. Rich in Vitamins B & E

They are rich in Vitamins B and E. These vitamins are responsible for that youthful glow in our skin. Vitamins B also fights against acne and skin inflammation, whereas Vitamins E prevents premature aging and wrinkles formation. Sesame is a great food for TCM Beauty regimes. 2. Rich in calcium and iron

Black sesame contains higher levels of calcium, iron and fiber compared to white sesame. It also contains specific fatty acids, amino acids & trace minerals that stimulates hair growth and makes hair black and shiny.

3. Rich in unsaturated fats and omega 6

Sesame oil comprises of 82% unsaturated fatty acids and it’s rich in Omega 6 fatty acids. Some research has shown that it may lower cholesterol levels and may slow the development of plague in the arteries and slow the progression of heart disease.

4. Contains powerful antioxidants for anti-aging

Sesame contains 2 powerful antioxidants - sesamol and sesaminol, they help to reduce cell damage caused by free radicals and therefore anti-aging.

5. Crucial for body & skin functions

Sesame also contains linoleic acid which is an essential fatty acid for many body functions and also crucial for skin functions. 

6. Lightens skin and reduces acne

Sesame therefore has strong anti-inflammatory properties and is commonly used to treat inflammatory conditions such as toothaches and joint pain.

In TCM, sesame is sweet in nature and nourishes the blood, stomach, liver and kidney. It is commonly used to treat those with poor health, anemia, dizziness and tinnitus, premature graying of hair and constipation. 

9. Aids in post-partum recovery

It is also commonly incorporated into the food for post-partum women for it is believed that the linoleic acid helps the uterus to contract after delivery.

10. Reduces hangover

It can be used to reduce hangover effects after a heavy drinking session.

 

Ways to enjoy sesame:

  • As a topping - Use the sesame seeds for your salads, sushi, buns, sesame oil chicken, porridge, rice, anything goes. It adds that fragrant nutty flavour to your food.

  • As an oil - sesame oil has a high smoke point (232˚C) and relatively neutral flavour. It's a great general-purpose oil, can be used for stir fry, sautés, roasts, and more.

  • As a dessert – sesame can be made in sesame paste, fried sesame glutinous balls, tangyuan balls in soup, muah chee coated with sesame instead of peanut, there are so many options and varieties.

  • As a butter – sesame seeds can be grounded and made into a butter like peanut butter. Spread it on bread or biscuits.

  • As a drink- sesame seed can be powdered and added to your drinks, such as soya milk or milk. Some local TCM shops sell sesame powder and you can add it to your oats or yoghurt too.
